Graduate Ambassadors of Science & Engineering will be running a one-day bridge-building competition at Frome College for 40 Year 10 pupils identified as being ‘Gifted and Talented’ in Maths, Science and DT.
The pupils will be introduced to the ideas behind bridge design and engineering will be presented as a stimulating career choice.
Following the introductory session the pupils, working in groups of 4 will be given a a brief of building a bridge of 1m clear span & 25mm bearing at each end. They will be given a choice of simple materials (spaghetti, drinking straws, blu-tak & sellotape) available at different prices. Their task will be to construct a bridge to carry a design load for 1 minute at minimal cost.
The winner will be the cheapest bridge which can carry the design load.
